The helicopter is actually transporting provisions to Phantom Ranch
In rock climbing self-rescue generally refers to the important rope techniques used to raise or lower (or both) an injured climber. On a glacier, self-rescue usually means assisting or extracting someone who has fallen into a crevasse. These technical self rescue techniques save lives. No one should should venture into the vertical or frozen world without the skills needed to preform a basic self-rescue. No less important are the Self-Rescue skills used for hiking. Being a smart hiker means being a safe hiker.
There are no ropes involved in the hikers self-rescues, just a lot of common sense ideas and practices. The hiking self-rescue skills call on the hiker to prevent illness and injury by practicing safe hiking techniques. Remember, your safety is your responsibility.
