A Massive Morning (Mount Massive)
We spent the night last night in Leadville, CO. Leadville is one of our favorite mountain towns. There is a Pizza Hut, Subway, Safeway, and a few motels on the outskirts of town; but on the main street all of the stores are small locally owned and operated fronts. It is quite refreshing.
Last evening at a coffee house and restaurant I tried to overhear what was going on in the mountain city. There were a lot of runners in town training for the big races of the summer. Leadville hosts the Leadville 100 in August. It is a boon for the city. All summer long runners and mountain bikers flock to the city to spend money and train. Where else in America can you can you find a motel or hostel room at over 10,000 feet?
Coming from sea level to 10,000 feet is not all good. I have trouble acclimating and did not sleep well at all. Amy is snoozing like a baby. I hope to get acclimated soon or we will have to go lower for a few days (or rather nights) to sleep.
Oh, it is also cool in town. How about 36 degrees and no humidity? You can't beat that. We left Nashville with morninsg in the mid-seventies and ninety percent humidity. It will take some getting used to the mountain climate, but I think I will manage!
We are hiking today to help acclimate. Our first scheduled climb in the West Ridge of Quandry on Thursday. All of our hikes Monday through Wednesday will be aimed at readying us for Quandry.
Happy mountain trails.
