073 Jake's Earth Day Tip 2009-04-22

Jake cleaning a plastic container

We are always looking for ways to do things greener - reduce, reuse, and recycle. It is Earth Day and Jake, the dog, gave us this idea...

To recycle plastics we clean the used food containers before placing them in the recycling bins. Some foods, like peanut butter, are hard to remove from the container and require a lot of hot water to clean the jar and the cleaning brush. Jake had a solution. All that we had to do was open the jar (though not mandatory), he would do the rest.

We had to cut the top off the jar for Jake to finish the job. (Jake’s suggestion: if peanut butter manufacturers would make wider jars it would be easier to reach the bottom.) In the end, Jake spent about thirty minutes worth of effort cleaning the jar, but he said it was worth it! And we have one clean jar ready for recycling.
