909 | Cummins Falls Marathon 2nd Annual |
2014-02-26 |
Saturday, Feb 22, was the second annual Cummins Falls State Park Marathon. The Marathon is an umbrella name for all of the races held that day ... there was a marathon (26.2 hilly miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), a 10k (6.2 miles), a 5k (3.1 miles), and the finish of the kids' progressive marathon. Basically, there was a race for anyone who wanted to run.
I didn't attend the race to run. Instead, I just wanted to visit a few friends and support the race.
The marathon and half marathon had already started when I arrived. After parking in a field, I moved to the action near the music and booths. It only took a few seconds to find a few friends. Dare, one of the biggest outdoor education evangelist I know, was there. We had a great visit discussing the past, present, and future of outdoor education.
In the meantime, runners were taking their mark and crossing the finish line. There were all ages, sizes, shapes, and kinds of runners, but all of them recognized the importance of moving.
The Cummins Falls Marathon is a small race when compared to the Music City Marathon, but the runners, workers, and onlookers were all part of the event. There was excitement, friendships, and camaraderie. It was a race.
The total participants (or finishers) were:
69 - marathoners
65 - half marathoners
66 - 10k runners
92 - 5k runners
40 - kids running the progressive marathon
Congratulations to all of the runners and thanks to all of the workers. Next year, hopefully even more
Happy Running trails
